This piece is based on the Japanese sashiko tradition of stitching.  'Hishi Seigaiha' or 'Diamond Blue Waves' derives from the diamond patterns based on stitched diagonal grids. Diamond patterns can symbolise a wish for increase or expansion and often feature on family crests.
